Many zones aim to trap the thrower and deny all flat throwing options. The thrower must either be an expert at breaking the mark, or be confident in throwing an over head in order to get the disc out. Throwing over the cup helps to ease the pressure and forces the defence to adapt.

Overheads can get you out of tough situations, particularly when the zone is set and all simple flat throws are being denied. A short throw directly over the cup can be a quick way out.
