Glossary

Flik uses a lot of terminology in the theory section, and to describe how to run a drill. Ultimate players around the world have a lot of different names for these terms, so we’ve compiled a glossary to make sure we all understand each other.

Around (throw): a throw around the back of the marker. See “Around Throw to Lateral Cut”

Attacking endzone: the endzone into which the team currently in possession (offence) are trying to score

Break side: the area of the field behind the marker

Break mark: throws to the area behind the marker

Cutter: an offensive player running around downfield, attempting to get open for a pass

Dish: typically a short pass, thrown backwards from a cutter to a handler who is running downfield, facing the attacking endzone

Downfield: the area between the disc and the attacking endzone

Dump: a backwards throw, typically used to reset the stall count

Guard (man to man): when one defender actively tries to prevent one offensive player from gaining possession

Handler: an offensive player who stays near to the disc and focuses on moving the disc

Huck / punt: a long throw towards the attacking endzone, sometimes relying more on luck than judgement

Inside (throw): a throw inside the mark, in front of their body. See “Inside Throw to Lateral Cut”

Lateral: throws or cuts that go perpendicular to the sidelines

Mark / marker (aka force): the defender who counts the stall; typically they will attempt to “force” the thrower to throw to one side of the field

Receiver: the offensive player catching (or about to catch) the disc

Reset: a short pass used to restart the stall count. Also used to describe a handler who is tasked with providing a reset opportunity

Straight up: when a marker acts to prevent downfield passes rather than preventing throws to one side of the field

Upline: cuts or throws into the space directly in front of the thrower that originate with a cut level with or behind the disc
