The art of defence is all about trying to make life difficult for the offence. As such, defensive and offensive strategy becomes a game of cat and mouse, an arms race as offences deliberately create situations that allow for a team to move the disc easily, then defences adapt to deny the same throws that the offence is looking for.

It should be stated explicitly that there is no such thing as “perfect” defence, just as there is no perfect offence; if such a defence existed then offence would become impossible (and vice versa) and the sport would become dull.

In this chapter, we begin by describing the core concepts that elite defences are based upon. Later, we will look at how these concepts are combined to tackle specific offences.
