What should the downfield defenders do when the disc is in the middle of the field (e.g., after a brick) or when it’s unclear which direction the middle handler will throw/swing the disc?

Typically, the best approach is to force towards the other handler defender. I’ve added a link above to a deep dive on Bravo’s handler defence which should help.

You may also wish to take the offence into account; if they are in a side stack, you may wish to force towards the stack.

There’s no one way to do it, the main thing is that your team are all on the same page. If in doubt, just pick a direction and clearly communicate it to the other defenders.
